Beauty can save the world! Tools & tips from designers we love.
5 things worth sharing this week.
Hey Crashers,
This week, 3 of our designer friends contribute, and we have 2 important reminders to share with you all.
Over the years, we’ve worked with and enjoyed the work of some pretty amazing designers. How great is good design!?! We asked our designer friends two questions;
What's one thing you wish you had known earlier in your design career?
What is the one project you are most proud of?
They were good enough to share their answers and kind enough to allow us to share them with you all. It speaks to the sort of people they are. We love them and want to be like them when we grow up!!

One: Something I wish I knew…
One thing I wish I had earlier in my creative career was the book:
Todd says:
“One of the “transitions we have to make when we move from maker to manager is we have to transition from control to influence. It is no longer our job to do the work, per se, but it is our job to lead the work.”
This book basically pointed out all of the ways I thought I was leading well but wasn't. Haha, It was definitely (and is STILL) a refining book. If anyone is interested in leading creative teams, this book is a great, easy, and engaging read. You'll underline a lot, and you'll be punched in the ego a lot, which is necessary.
Two: The project I am most proud of…
Leighton created the Jesus Bible with his team, and it is one of the things he is most proud of. It’s also one of the gifts we give away regularly because it’s so amazing!

One: Something I wish I knew…
“When feeling lost in a design or project, always go back to your research.”
This was a tip from one of my design professors at Uni, and it has helped me over and over. Might just be me, but at some point in a project, I always hit a wall (usually in the last 20% ), and it can be so tempting and even natural to start a whole new path of ideas, but this tip has always pointed me back to my original pitch. It helps ground me, helps bring into focus the main theme we were working to communicate, and from this initial research, the answer usually emerges.
These two books get carried around in my bag most weeks.

“Six Names of Beauty” Crispin Sartwell
“Called to Attraction: an Introduction to the theology of beauty” Brendan Thomas Sammon
Two: The project I am most proud of…
I think Van Gogh has it right when he says;
“There is nothing more truly artistic than to love people.”
Artists Still Live Here Magazine, birthed in covid, was a project that felt just like that. Celebrating the beauty of the people of our community. While this magazine project is a little old, the stories of the artists and creatives in its pages continue to inspire me and stir the artist's heart within.

And I also did this project with some dear friends Hodgy and Dan (The Brooke Studio) and Pip (Eternal Vision).
Fun projects are made 1000 times better when getting to work with friends you trust creatively. They create a safe space for sharpening ideas and collaborating on all layers of a design to bring it to life in such a beautiful and cohesive way.

One: Something I wish I knew…
Don’t be precious.
My first ‘big’ project I ever did, the feedback I was given was, “This looks like clowns vomit”. I learned quickly that even though I might love something, it doesn’t always mean it’s right for the client. And also take every piece of feedback as an opportunity to grow. Don’t take it to heart.
Two. The project I am most proud of…
This may sound like a cop-out but whenever someone asks me this, I just simply reply - the next project I work on! Why? Because it’s a fresh opportunity to do something new. And it keeps me motivated to try new things and expand as a creative.
