IS THAT A DOG IN A BLANKET... OR AM I MISSING SOMETHING?
5 things worth sharing this week
Hey Crashers,
Some images leave you with more questions than answers. Take the photo above as an example. Who thought it was a good idea to wrap a dog in a blanket, take it to a forest and photograph it? I guess Matthew Henry from Unsplash did.
Perhaps he was just curious?
And that’s what this edition of the Rapid 5 is all about; being curious.
We hope it inspires you and sends you down a rabbit hole or two.
Why?
Just because. 😉
5 things worth sharing this week.
WHO STICKS A NEEDLE IN THEIR EYE?
“In the absence of any other proof,
the thumb alone would convince me of God’s existence.”
- Isaac Newton
Apparently, Isaac Newton (you know, the guy who saw an apple fall from a tree and is said to have had an epiphany about gravity), sometimes called the “father of modern science,” was deeply religious. He kept a list of his sins in a notebook that he carried around.
Not only that, but he wrote notes and kept diagrams in his notebooks. One time he even decided to stick a needle into his eye!!
Why share this? To remind us all that curiosity can change the world. What are you curious about?
SPEAKING OF EYES. YEAH, THAT’S A DRAWING!
Check out this 4-minute video with artist Jono Dry creating this incredible piece. While the video is only 4 minutes, his works of art take months to create. The attention to detail and commitment to the outcome are incredible. How does it compare to the effect you put into your art? Ouch!!
ART DOESN’T MATTER. FRIENDSHIP DOES!
According to a study published in 2018, friendship may matter more to the success of an artist than their actual art. This article explains why. This makes sense to me, and it’s a reminder to keep the main things the main things!
The diagram above takes this notion and tries to visualize the findings. It is from a MOMA exhibition from 2012 called “Inventing Abstraction.”
IS A.I. ART A GOOD THING?
Earlier this year, Kevin Munger (Assistant Professor of Political Science and Social Data Analytics at Penn State University) proposed that LLMs ( in laymen’s terms, AI chatbots, etc.) should be banned from referring to themselves in the first person. He suggested that they should not call themselves “I” and they should not refer to themselves and humans as “we.”
In this article, he explains the danger. It’s heavy, but if you’re into A.I., it raises some good questions as you decide to embrace or reject the technology.
WHO CAN BE AN ARTIST?
Most people would reject the notion that an engineer could be an artist. But art comes in many different forms. I love this guy’s use of 3d printing and engineering in his sculptures because it pushes the boundaries. Watch how he designed and made it in the full video, or check out the end result here.
